Why Does My Tap Water Smell Like a Pool? Chlorine, Chloramine, and What That Smell Means

If your tap water smells like a swimming pool, the most likely explanation is the least alarming one: you are smelling the disinfectant your utility adds on purpose. Nearly every public water system in the United States disinfects with chlorine or chloramine, and a residual amount is deliberately left in the water as it travels through miles of pipe so it keeps killing germs all the way to your faucet. The EPA caps that residual at 4 milligrams per liter — a level its risk assessments treat as safe to drink for a lifetime — and most systems run well below the cap. The smell is real, but it is the smell of the protection working, not of something going wrong.

Chlorine vs. chloramine: the two disinfectants

Chlorine is the classic. It is effective and cheap, but per the CDC it gets used up quickly as water moves through the system — which is why many utilities switched to chloramine, a compound of chlorine and ammonia that lasts much longer in the pipes. The two smell and behave differently in your kitchen. Free chlorine is volatile: leave a pitcher uncovered in the refrigerator and much of the smell is gone in a few hours. Chloramine is stable by design — that is its whole job — so it does not fade out of a standing pitcher the same way, and it shrugs off basic filters that would catch chlorine. If you want to know which one you have, that is the test: a pool smell that fades overnight in an open pitcher points to chlorine; a milder chemical taste that never fades points to chloramine. Your utility's annual water quality report, which it must provide, will say outright.

Why the smell comes and goes

A few honest reasons the smell is stronger some weeks. Utilities periodically boost disinfectant levels or temporarily switch from chloramine back to free chlorine to clean the distribution system — many do this on an annual schedule, and they announce it. Warm summer water carries and releases odors more readily than cold winter water. And homes closer to the treatment plant simply receive water with more residual left, because less of it has been consumed in transit. Oddly, a strong chemical smell can also mean there is organic material reacting with the chlorine at your particular tap — if the smell is only in one faucet, or only in hot water, the water heater or that fixture is a better suspect than the utility.

Does it change anything for hydration?

No. Water at normal residual levels hydrates exactly the same, and choosing to drink less water because of a chlorine taste is the only genuinely unhealthy option on the table. If the taste keeps you from drinking, fix the taste. For chlorine: the open-pitcher trick, or any standard activated-carbon filter. For chloramine: a filter whose packaging specifically says catalytic carbon or chloramine reduction — standard carbon cartridges let much of it through. And a practical note for the bottle you carry: an insulated stainless bottle will not remove disinfectant, but cold water reads as dramatically less "chemical" to the nose than room-temperature water, which is why the same tap water people complain about at the sink often tastes fine after a night in the fridge.

When a smell is worth a phone call

The pool smell is expected. Other smells are not. Rotten egg, fuel, sewage, or a metallic bitterness are not disinfectant smells, and a sudden dramatic change in your water's smell, taste, or color — especially if neighbors notice it too — is worth reporting to your utility the same day. If you are on a private well, none of the above applies to you the same way: wells are not chlorinated by a utility or covered by these federal rules, and the well owner is responsible for testing.
