Should You Drink From the Hot Tap? What Comes Out of the Water Heater

No—use the cold tap for anything you are going to drink, cook with, or use to make baby formula. The EPA's guidance is explicit on this point: hot water dissolves lead from plumbing more quickly than cold water does, so if you need hot water, the right move is to draw it cold and heat it. It is one of the few water-safety rules that costs nothing to follow and has a real mechanism behind it.
Where the Lead Comes From
Lead almost never originates at the treatment plant or in the source water. It comes from the plumbing between the main and the faucet—lead service lines, lead solder on copper joints, and brass fixtures that legally contained lead for decades. Homes built before 1986 are the most likely to have lead pipes, solder, and fixtures, though newer homes are not automatically exempt, because the definition of "lead-free" plumbing has tightened in stages rather than all at once.
What matters for the hot-versus-cold question is that lead does not sit in the water waiting to be delivered. It leaches into the water from the pipe surface, and how much ends up in the glass depends on three things: how corrosive the water is, how long it has been in contact with the pipe, and how warm it is. Temperature accelerates that leaching. That is the entire basis for the cold-tap rule.
The Water Heater Adds Its Own Problem
A water heater is a tank holding dozens of gallons at an elevated temperature for hours at a stretch. Two things follow from that:
- Long contact time. Water in a tank has been sitting against metal far longer than water moving through a cold line. Contact time is one of the main variables in how much metal ends up dissolved.
- Sediment and scale collect at the bottom. Tanks accumulate mineral scale and sediment over years of use, which is why manufacturers recommend periodic flushing. That is a maintenance issue rather than a lead issue, but it is another reason the hot side is not the side you want in a glass.
Neither of these makes a hot shower dangerous. The concern is ingestion—drinking, cooking, filling a kettle from the hot side because it will boil faster, or mixing formula.
Flushing: The Other Half of the Rule
Contact time matters on the cold side too. The longer water has been sitting in your pipes, the more lead it may contain, which is why EPA guidance recommends running the tap for 15 to 30 seconds—or until the water runs cold or reaches a steady temperature—before using it for drinking or cooking, when the water has not been used for several hours. First thing in the morning and after a workday away are the two times this matters most.
The water you flush does not have to be wasted. It is perfectly good for plants, for rinsing dishes, or for filling a pet bowl.
Two Things That Do Not Work
Boiling does not remove lead. This is the most common and most consequential misunderstanding. Boiling drives off water as steam and leaves the lead behind, so lead and copper concentrations in boiled water are higher, not lower. Boiling is the right response to a microbial boil-water advisory. It is exactly the wrong response to a lead concern.
Clear, good-tasting water proves nothing. Lead in drinking water has no color, taste, or smell at the concentrations that matter. The only way to know what is coming out of a particular tap is a test—most water utilities will tell you how to get one, and many offer test kits or testing programs directly. Your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report also tells you what the system as a whole looks like, though it cannot tell you about your own service line.
What to Actually Do
- Cold tap for everything you ingest. Drinking, cooking, coffee, tea, ice, pet bowls, formula.
- Flush a stagnant line. 15 to 30 seconds, or until the temperature steadies, after several hours of no use.
- Clean faucet aerators periodically. Debris and particles can collect in the screen at the end of the tap.
- Find out what your service line is made of. Many utilities now publish service-line material inventories for their systems.
- If you filter, filter for the right thing. A filter has to be certified for lead reduction specifically—a general taste-and-odor filter is not the same product.
