Indoor Volleyball Hydration: Why an Air-Conditioned Gym Doesn't Mean Low Sweat Loss

Indoor volleyball players sweat at roughly 1.2 liters an hour during practice—on par with handball and not far behind indoor soccer—yet a gym with air conditioning and no outdoor sun rarely gets treated as a heat-risk environment the way a football field or a cross-country course does. That mismatch between perceived risk and actual fluid loss is exactly why indoor athletes are more likely to show up already behind on hydration and stay behind through practice.

An Indoor Court Does Not Mean a Low-Sweat Sport

A 2010 study in the European Journal of Sport Science measured sweat rate and sodium loss in elite European indoor team-sport athletes, including volleyball players, during real practice sessions. Volleyball players sweated at an average of 1.2 liters per hour—a rate driven by the sport's explosive, repeated jumping and short sprints, not by outdoor heat exposure. Because there is no sun and the gym is climate-controlled, neither players nor coaches tend to treat the setting as one that demands the same fluid discipline as an outdoor practice, even though the sweat rate says otherwise.

Players Often Start Practice Already Behind

The same study found that more than 91 percent of the players were moderately hypohydrated—measured by urine specific gravity above 1.020—at waking, three hours before practice even began. On average, players replaced only about 62 percent of the fluid they lost to sweat during the session, and total body-mass loss reached up to 1.2 percent by the end of practice. None of that crossed the well-established 2 percent threshold linked to measurable performance decline, but it illustrates a pattern: volleyball players are routinely training in a fluid deficit that starts before they ever walk into the gym, not because they are ignoring hydration, but because an air-conditioned court does not send the same "drink now" signal a hot outdoor field does.

Why the Signal Gets Missed

Sweat evaporates quickly in a dry, climate-controlled gym, so a volleyball player rarely looks visibly drenched the way an outdoor athlete does after the same duration of exertion—even when the actual fluid loss is comparable. Indoor sport also tends to run in short, high-intensity bursts with brief breaks between rallies rather than the sustained pacing of a distance event, so there is less of a natural rhythm for a recurring drink cue. Both factors point the same direction: the sport looks lower-risk than the sweat rate says it is.

What a Practical Routine Looks Like

Because the deficit often starts before practice, the fix starts there too—drinking through the morning or afternoon leading into a session, not just during it. During practice, treating every rotation off the court or every timeout as a drink cue closes most of the gap the research found, since those stoppages already happen on a predictable rhythm in volleyball.
