Hydration With a Mouthguard: Why Athletes Drink Less Wearing One

Athletes who wear mouthguards tend to drink less during practice and games, and the reason is mechanical rather than physiological: taking a drink means removing the guard, holding it somewhere clean, drinking, and putting it back in. That is four steps instead of one, repeated every water break, and the easy shortcut is to skip the drink. The consequences land in two places at once—ordinary dehydration, and a drier mouth that removes the protection saliva provides.

Why Saliva Is the Part People Miss

Saliva is not just moisture. It buffers acid, rinses food debris, delivers minerals back to enamel, and carries antimicrobial proteins. The American Association of Orthodontists frames it directly for athletes: saliva is the mouth's built-in defense against acid and bacteria, and dehydration reduces how well it works. Less fluid in the body means less saliva produced, and a mouth that is both drier and more acidic for longer after anything you drink that is not water.

Add a mouthguard and a second drying mechanism appears. A guard encourages mouth breathing, especially during hard efforts, and mouth breathing moves a lot of dry air across oral tissue. Athletes in high-exertion sports are already breathing through the mouth; the appliance makes that the default rather than the exception.

What a Guard Traps

A mouthguard is a warm, wet plastic appliance that sits against teeth and gums for hours. The American Dental Association's guidance on athletic mouth protectors is clear that guards need to be cleaned rather than just rinsed: brush it with a toothbrush and toothpaste, or use a denture-style cleaner that fizzes in water, rinse with cool to lukewarm water, and store it in a ventilated container so it can dry. An uncleaned guard harbors bacteria, and a guard that lives sealed in a damp gym bag does not dry at all.

There is a related caution worth naming. Research published in JADA notes that in athletes who wear guards for long periods, oral homeostasis can shift, and that poorly fitting or defective guards can injure the soft tissue of the mouth. A guard that rubs is a guard that gets left out, which defeats the entire protective purpose.

Why Sports Drinks Make It Worse Under a Guard

The instinct at a water break is often to reach for something sweet and acidic. Under a mouthguard, that is the worst combination available: sugar and acid get held against enamel by an appliance that reduces the rinsing action saliva would normally provide, in a mouth that is already drier than usual. Water has no such problem—it is the only thing you can drink that requires no cleanup afterward for teeth or for the guard itself.

If a long session genuinely calls for electrolytes, the AAO's athlete guidance suggests choosing lower-acidity options and rinsing with plain water afterward. The simpler version of the same advice: drink the electrolytes deliberately, then finish with water, then reinsert the guard.

A Break Routine That Actually Gets Followed

  • Drink on a schedule, not on thirst. The AAO's advice for athletes is to carry a bottle and drink to a plan, because thirst arrives after the deficit does.
  • Give the guard a home. A ventilated case clipped to the bag, not a hand, a helmet, or a bench. The guard having nowhere clean to go is the single biggest reason the drink gets skipped.
  • Use a lid you can open one-handed. The guard is in the other hand. A cap you have to unscrew and then hold is the friction point.
  • Rinse the mouth, then the guard, before it goes back in—water only.
  • Clean the guard properly after the session, not just under the tap, and let it air-dry in the case.

The Fall-Sports Timing

This is football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse season, which is when mouthguard use is at its highest and when practices still fall on warm afternoons. It is also when most of the year's dental trauma to young athletes happens. Mouthguards prevent a substantial share of sports-related oral injuries—that is not in dispute. The point is that wearing one should not quietly cost an athlete their water intake, and with a workable routine it does not have to.
