Krill are small, shrimp-like crustaceans found in all the world’s oceans. They are an important part of the marine food web, providing food for many species of fish, whales, and seabirds. Krill feed on phytoplankton, tiny photosynthetic organisms that produce their own food through photosynthesis. Krill are typically no more than a few centimeters long, and can be distinguished by their long antennae and translucent bodies.

Habitat and Distribution

Krill can be found in all of the world’s oceans, but tend to congregate in higher concentrations near the poles. These cold-water habitats are where krill feed on phytoplankton, as well as other smaller organisms. Krill are usually found in the top 200 meters of the ocean, and congregate in large swarms that can stretch for kilometers.

Their presence in the Food Chain

Krills are an important part of the marine food web, providing food for a wide variety of species. Fish like salmon and herring feed on krill, as do whales, seals, seabirds, and squid. Krill are also preyed upon by larger fish and sharks. As a result, they are an important link in the marine ecosystem, as they provide food for many different species.

Human Use of them

Krill have long been harvested for human use, primarily for use as fish bait and as a source of food for humans. Krill oil is popular for its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to have a range of health benefits. Krill is also used in the production of fertilizers and animal feed.
