It's one of the most-searched health questions on the internet: how much water should I drink a day? And the most popular answer — eight 8-ounce glasses — isn't actually where the science landed.
The real numbers
The National Academy of Medicine's general guidance is about 91 oz (2.7 L) of total water per day for women and 125 oz (3.7 L) for men. But here's the part everyone misses: that's total water, and roughly 20% of it comes from food. So the amount you actually need to drink is closer to 9–13 cups (72–100 oz) a day for most adults.
The 8x8 rule isn't wrong — it's just generic
64 oz a day won't hurt you, and for smaller, less active people it's roughly right. But your real number depends on your body and your day. A quick way to personalize it: take your body weight in pounds, divide by two, and drink about that many ounces. A 150-lb person lands around 75 oz — right in the science-backed range.
Drink more than your baseline when…
- You exercise. Add 8–16 oz for every 30–45 minutes of sweating.
- It's hot. Summer heat can double your fluid losses without you noticing (more on that in our Summer Hydration Guide).
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding. Needs go up meaningfully — ask your doctor.
- You drink coffee or alcohol. Both nudge fluids out; match each round with water.
Two built-in gauges beat any formula: thirst (don't ignore it) and urine color (pale straw = hydrated; apple juice = drink up). And if you have kidney, heart, or other medical conditions, check your target with your doctor — more isn't always better.
The bottle math that makes it automatic
Here's the trick that actually works: stop counting glasses and start counting refills. With an 18 oz bottle, your day is just 4–5 refills: one when you wake up, one mid-morning, one with lunch, one mid-afternoon, one with dinner. Done — 72–90 oz without thinking about it.
